At the Heart of Enjoyment:

at the heart of enjoyment (square).jpeg
Two- to three-hour interactive workshop for interpretive artists

In this workshop, which can be held online or in person, I lead a discussion of the value and importance of enjoyment in our work as interpretive artists (musicians, sign language interpreters, dancers, etc), then an examination of what can get in the way of our enjoyment.

The workshop culminates in a series of visualization exercises in which various strategies for discovering and cultivating enjoyment are explored.

Participants are encouraged to share their own thoughts, experiences, and challenges, and both discussion and activities center around these contributions.

Hearing More Voices: How Our Expectations Influence and Shape Our Students

Interactive workshop for music teachers, parents of learning musicians, and anyone who works with, is, or was a learning musician

Teachers' expectations, both of their students and themselves, have a huge impact on students' attitude and performance.

In this interactive workshop, we explore expectations of all kinds. What preconceived ideas do we carry about how successful a student will or can be? What do we expect to see and hear?

What do we think a "successful" lesson looks like? What is our response when we, the student, or the lesson bucks those expectations?

How are these countless interactions with our students affecting the landscape of classical music as a whole?

In a supportive and creative environment, I encourage teachers to examine their own teaching for known or unknown expectations, and we explore methods I've developed for self-examination and change.
